Quota of inspection work for IACs. - Income Tax - 1217/CBDT

INSTRUCTION NO. 1217/CBDT Dated : November 23, 1978 On the basis of the decision in the Commissioner's Conference in May 1976 the quota of inspection work for IACs was fixed as under vide Directorate of Inspection(IT)'s F.No.I-3/76/DIT dated 14th May 1976. i. IAC Territorial Ranges -----------------------------6 ii. IACs Central Ranges Companies Ranges-----------------4 It will be seen from the Director of Inspection(IT)'s review of Inspection work done by IACs in the financial year 1977-78 sent under his F.No.I-5/77/DIT dated 27th May, 1978 that as against 1150 inspections programmed by the IACs for the financial year 1977-78 only 743 inspections were actually made. This comes to 65% only. One disquieting feature is that many IACs have not done any inspections at all. You are requested to impress upon the IACs that inspection is one of their more important duties and any failure to carry out the inspections as per the guidelines and quota fixed will be taken serious notice of. The Director of Inspection's review also shows that many of the inspections have been carried out in a very routine manner and the IACs have not been choosing the more, important cases for inspection. When making your comments on the IACs inspections in future this aspect of the matter should also be duly considered.
