Instalment of advance tax due to be paid by 15th September 1979. - Income Tax - 1296/CBDT

INSTRUCTION NO. 1296/CBDT Dated : December 17, 1979 It has been brought to the notice of the Board that the Reserve Bank of India at Calcutta could not accept all payments tendered at its counters by the advance tax-payers towards the instalment due on 15th September 1979 and the parties who could not be accommodated on 15th September 1979 had been advised by the Reserve Bank of India, by the issue of a notice to tender the deposits on the next working day. 2. The above situation arose due to the fact that the bank employees were on a token strike on 14th September 1979 and 15th September 1979 was a Saturday, on which the Banks' counters transact public business only for restricted hours and there was heavy rush at the counters. 3. The Reserve Bank of India also informed the Commissioner of Income-tax, Calcutta that such ad-hoc arrangement may be necessary for some more days as the pressure over their counters was expected to continue and requested that the lapse of the advance tax payers in not paying the instalment of advance tax due on 15th September 1979 by the scheduled date be condoned. 4. A similar representation regarding the difficulties arising from the strike of 14th September had been received from Madras also. Such difficulties might have been felt at other centres all over the country. 5. In view of this it has been decided by Government that instalment of advance tax due to be paid by 15th September 1979 should be deemed to have been paid in time for all purposes of the Act, if it has been paid on or before 22nd September, 1979.
