The Tribunal referenced a similar provision in the Wealth-tax Act and a judgment by the Madras High Court to support its interpretation. The Tribunal emphasized that the method beneficial to the assessee should be adopted when there are different ways to compute liabilities. Additionally, the Tribunal highlighted that the form prescribed under the Estate Duty Act supported the view that debts should be deducted from the value of gross immovable property before applying exemptions. Ultimately, the Tribunal dismissed the revenue's appeal, upholding the decision of the Appellate CED regarding the deduction of mortgage debt in the estate valuation process.
