CHAPTER III. THE STATE LEGISLATURE General Article.168. Constitution of Legislatures in States.- (1) For every State there shall be a Legislature which shall consist of the Governor, and- (a) in the States of 1 [Andhra Pradesh], Bihar, [2] *** [3] [Madhya Pradesh], [4] *** [5] Maharashtra, 6 Karnataka, [7] [***] 9 [Tamil Nadu] *** [8] and Uttar Pradesh, two Houses; (b) in other States, one House. (2) Where there are two Houses of the Legislature of a State, one shall be known as the Legislative Council and the other as the Legislative Assembly, and where there is only one House, it shall be known as the Legislative Assembly. ***************************** Notes : 1 . Earlier the words Andhra Pradesh were omitted by the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council (Abolition) Act, 1985 (34 of 1985), sec. (w.e.f. 1-6-1986). 2. The word "Bombay" omitted by the Bombay ay Reorganisation Act, 1960 (11 of 1960), Section 20 (w.e.f. 1-5-1960). 3 . No date has been appointed under Section 8(2) of the Constitution (Seventh Amendment) Act, 1956, for the insertion of the words "Madhaya Pradesh" in this sub-clause. 4 . The words "Tamil Nadu," omitted by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council (Abolition) Act, 1986 (40 of 1986), Section 4 (w.e.f. 1-11-1986). Earlier the words Tamil Nadu were Substituted by the Madras state (Alteration of Name) Act, 1968 (53 of 1968), sec. 4, for the words Madras (w.e.f. 14-1-1969). 5. Inserted by the Bombay ay Reorganisation Act, 1960 (11 of 1960), Section 20 (w.e.f. 1-5-1960). 6. Substituted by the Mysore State (Alteration of Name) Act, 1973 (31 of 1973), Section 4, for "Mysore" (w.e.f. 1-11-1973), which was inserted by the Constitution (Seventh Amendment) Act, 1956, Section 8 (1). 7. The word ", Punjab," omitted by the Punjab Legislative Council (Abolition) Act, 1969 (46 of 1969), Section 4 (w.e.f. 7-1-1970). 8 . Substituted by the West Bangal Legislative Council (Abolition) Act, 1969 (20 of 1969), Section 4, for "Uttar Pradesh and West Bangal" (w.e.f. 1-8-1969). 9. Inserted by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council Act, 2010 (16 of 2010), sec. 3(1)
