Index of Eight Core Industries (Base: 2004-05=100), April, 2015

1.    The summary of the Index of Eight Core Industries (base: 2004-05) is given at the Annexure.

2.    The Eight Core Industries comprise nearly 38 % of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP).  The combined Index of Eight Core Industries stands at 162.4 in April, 2015, which was 0.4 % lower compared to the index of April, 2014. Its cumulative growth during April to March, 2014-15 was 3.6 %.

Coal

3.    Coal production (weight: 4.38 %) increased by 7.9 % in April, 2015 over April, 2014. Its cumulative index during April to March, 2014-15 increased by 8.4 % over corresponding period of previous year.

Crude Oil

4.    Crude Oil production (weight: 5.22 %) declined by 2.7 % in April, 2015 over April, 2014. Its cumulative index during April to March, 2014-15 declined by 0.9 % over the corresponding period of previous year.

Natural Gas

5.    The Natural Gas production (weight: 1.71 %) declined by 3.6 % in April, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to March, 2014-15 declined by 5.2 % over the corresponding period of previous year.

Refinery Products (0.93% of Crude Throughput)

6.    Petroleum Refinery production (weight: 5.94%) declined by 2.9 % in April, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to March, 2014-15 increased by 0.4 % over the corresponding period of previous year.

Fertilizers

7.    Fertilizer production (weight: 1.25%) declined by 0.04 % in April, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to March, 2014-15 declined by 0.1 % over the corresponding period of previous year.

Steel (Alloy + Non-Alloy)

8.    Steel production (weight: 6.68%) increased by 0.6 % in April, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to March, 2014-15 increased by 0.8 % over the corresponding period of previous year.

Cement

9.    Cement production (weight: 2.41%) declined by 2.4 % in April, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to March, 2014-15 increased by 5.7 % over the corresponding period of previous year.

Electricity

10.     Electricity generation (weight: 10.32%) declined by 1.1 % in April, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to March, 2014-15 increased by 8.1 % over the corresponding period of previous year.

 Note 1: Data are provisional. Revision has been made based on revised data received for corresponding month of previous year in respect of Coal, Crude Oil, Natural Gas, Refinery Product, Steel, Cement and Electricity. Accordingly, indices for the month April, 2014 have been revised.

Note 2: Release of the index for May, 2015 will be on Tuesday, 30^th June, 2015.
