Press Information Bureau Government of India Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) 04-October-2012 20:37 IST In pursuance of the PCPIR policy of the Government of India, notified in April 2007, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs had earlier approved the proposal of the Government of West Bengal to set up a PCPIR in the Haldia Municipal Area and Nayachar islands in Purba Medinipur districts of the State, on 23rd February, 2009. The Government of India has since considered the intimation of the decision of the Government of West Bengal to develop an Industrial park, power plant and an eco tourism park on Nayachar Island in Haldia, Purba, Medinipur districts, instead of the PCPIR project and accordingly decided to accede to the same. As per the PCPIR policy, the implementation of the PCPIRs are reviewed by the Central Government on a quarterly basis, since their approval by CCEA. After the new Government took over in West Bengal, there were news reports that as promised during the elections to the State Legislative Assembly, the new Government would not go ahead with the PCPIR project. The State Government also stopped attending all review meetings. Finally, the State Government of West Bengal informed this Department vide its letter dated 8th February, 2012 that it has decided to develop an industrial park, power plant and an eco tourism park on the Nayachar Island in Haldia, Purba Medinipur District, and therefore, it will not be developing the PCPIR Project. *** |
