A tally was attempted of the companies registered with the Register of Companies from 1st April, 1969 to 31st March, 1974 with those on the record of the Income-tax Department. - Income Tax - 867/CBDTExtract INSTRUCTION NO. 867/CBDT Dated : August 23, 1975 Reference is invited to Board's Instruction Nos. 700* and 780* issued from F.No. 228/3/74-ITA-II, dated 4th June, 1974 and 2nd November, 1974 respectively, by which a tally was attempted of the companies registered with the Register of Companies from 1st April, 1969 to 31st March, 1974 with those on the record of the Income-tax Department. 2. Public Accounts Committee in connection with the Comptroller Auditor General's Report 1973-74 has asked for the following information:- "The Number of company assessees as on 31st March 1974 is stated to be 32,707. But according to the 18th Annual Report on the Working and Administration of Companies Act, 1956, the total number of companies is 40,169. Please reconcile these two figures and state how many companies registered under the Companies Act prior to 1st April, 1974 have not yet been brought on record as assesses. 3. The Board desires that an Inspector may be sent to the officers of the Register of Companies with a list of companies already on the record of the Department or on the trial register of the Department and he should be asked to find out the names therefrom of companies which are not on our record so far. Enquiry may be made regarding these cases and a complete tally and reasons under broad heads for the companies not be sent to the Board by 30-9-1975. 4. The Board also desires that annual reconciliation should be attempted thereafter for the companies registered during the immediately preceding financial year so as to enable us to furnish the figures annually asked by the P.A.C. and to have a grip over the companies annually registered so as to bring them on our record at the earliest possible time.
