Appointment of Chairman and Member of CBDT No.402/92/2006-MC (02 of 2009) Government of India / Ministry of Finance Department of Revenue Central Board of Direct Taxes, New Delhi dated 31st January 2009 PRESS RELEASE Shri S. S. N. Moorthy today took over as Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes on retirement of Shri N. B. Singh. Shri Moorthy belongs to 1973 batch of the Indian Revenue Service. Before joining the CBDT as Member in August 2008, he was Director General of Income Tax (Investigation) in Mumbai for over two years. Earlier he served in various capacities in the Income Tax department in Kerala, Tamilnadu and Maharashtra; and also had a stint as Member of the Kerala Sales Tax Appellate Tribunal. Hailing from the state of Kerala, he holds a Masters degree in English, a degree in Law and keenly follows Karnatic classical music. Shri Sudhir Chandra, also from the 1973 batch of the IRS, joined the CBDT today as a Member. Before joining the CBDT, he was Chief Commissioner in Ghaziabad for over 2 years. Earlier he served in various capacities in the Income Tax department in Mumbai, Delhi, Tamilnadu and North Western region. A resident of Delhi, he holds a Masters degree in Physics, a degree in Law, is an avid reader and plays piano in his spare time.
