No. B.6/2/87-TRU Dated 23-3-1987 Government of India Ministry of Finance (Department of Revenue) New Delhi Subject : Printing of length of cigarettes on the cigarette packages - Regarding. Representations have been received from cigarette companies expressing difficulties with regard to printing of length of cigarettes on cigarette packages on account of considerable inventory of packing material already lying with them and requesting that they should be permitted to print the length (as well as price) of cigarettes on the cigarette slide itself in respect of the existing inventory. 2. The matter has been examined by the Board and it has been decided to permit manufacturers to print the length (as well as retail price) of cigarettes on the cigarette slide in respect of the stocks of packing materials already lying with them and clearances of such cigarettes shall be permitted upto 31-5-1987. 3. In respect of clearance after 31-5-1987, the length of the cigarette shall be printed on the cigarette shell itself and not anywhere else. 4. The above relaxation will not apply to any new brands proposed to be introduced by the manufacturers. In respect of new brands declaration relating to the length of cigarettes should be on the cigarettes pack (shell) itself. 5. It has been further decided that in case a manufacturer exhausts the existing stock before 31-5-1987, in respect of fresh stock of packaging material the length of cigarettes has to be indicated on the cigarette pack (shell). 6. Collectors of Central Excise are requested to permit clearances of cigarettes on the basis of the above instructions. They may however, ask the manufacturers :- (a) to declare the number of packages in respect of which they want to take the relaxation of printing the size on the slide; and (b) to carry advertisements through the media informing the consumer about the length and retail price of various brands.
