TDS instruction No. 40 [F.No. SW/TDS/2/2/09-DIT(S)-II][Vol.III] Dated: 30-06-2010 TANs actually do not relate to Central Govt / State Govt. category, the same have been registered under Govt. category. Such TANs need to be identified and appropriately categorized. Some of such instances relate to TANs belonging to Banks, Universities, etc. 2. As a part of TAN database clean up drive with (emphasis on Govt. TANs) the exercise assumes importance. Further the exercise would help us to map the actual Govt. TANs against the PAOs / TOs to whom Account Officer Identification Number are being allotted. 3. In the above context, kindly find enclosed details of TANs which are categorized under Govt. in the TAN database and which relate to RCCs falling under your jurisdiction. 4. It is requested that appropriate categorization of TANs under Govt. and other non-Govt. categories may kindly be made in the TAN database. The exercise has to be done by the TDS AOs in the ITD system. The procedure for re-categorization of such TANs is attached as Annexure. 5. It would be helpful in case the above exercise is completed at an early date to enable us to start the process of mapping of active Govt. TANs against the Pr. Accounts officers. 6. In the list being attached there may also be cases where the offices have since closed down and therefore the TANs ought to be closed. It is suggested that in such cases, the TANs may kindly be got closed to prevent misuse of such TANs. The procedure to close such TANs is also shown in attached Annexure.
