Iron or steel Notification No. 86/86-Cus. Dated 17-2-1986 In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of section 25 of the Customs Act, 1962 (52 of 1962) the Central Government being satisfied that it is necessary in the public interest so to do, hereby exempts the goods falling within the Chapter 72 or Chapter 73 of the First Schedule to the Customs Tariff Act, 1975 (51 of 1975) specified in column (2) of the Table hereto annexed, when imported into India, from so much of that portion of the duty of customs leviable thereon which is specified in the said First Schedule as is in excess of the amount calculated at the rate specified in the corresponding entry in column (3) of the said Table : Provided that nothing contained in this notification shall affect the exemption granted under any other notification of the Government of India for the time being in force, from the duty of customs specified in the said First Schedule in respect of goods referred to in this notification. Railway and tramway track construction material of iron or steel (other than of stainless steel) the following : 40% ad valorem rails, check-rails, switch blades crossing (or frogs), crossing pieces, point rods, rack rails, sleepers, fish plates, chairs, chair wedges, sole plates (base plates), rail clips, bedplates, ties, and other material specialised for joining or fixing rails. 5. Tubes and pipes and blanks therefor of iron or steel (other than of stainless steel); (i) drilling tubes and pipes and blanks therefore 45% ad valorem (ii) Tubes and pipes for boilers falling within the heading Nos. 84.02 and blanks therefore 45% ad valorem (iii) Tubes and pipes sheathed or lined with corrosion resisting material, such as glass, rubber and plastic 45% ad valorem (iv) Others. 70% ad valorem 6. Tube and pipe fitting (for example elbows, unions and flanges of iron or steel (other than of stainless steel). 70% ad valorem 7. Structures and roofings parts of structures (for example hangers and other buildings; bridges, and bridge sections, lock-gate towers, lattice, masts, roofs roofings, frameworks, door and window frames, shutters, balustrades, pillars and columns) of iron or steel, plates, strips, rods, angles, shapes, sections, tubes, and the like, prepared for use in structures, of iron or steel (other than of stainless steel). 40% ad valorem 8. Reservoirs, tanks, vats, casks, drums, cans, boxes, and similar containers for any material (other than compressed or liquefied gas), of iron or steel (other than stainless steel). 70% 9. Containers of iron or steel, for compressed or liquefied gas. 45% 10. Stranded wire, cables, cordage, ropes, plated bads, slings, and the like, of iron or steel wire, but excluding insulated electric cables (other than stainless steel). 70% 11. Barbed iron or steel wire; twisted, hood or single flat wire, barbed or not, and loosely twisted double wire, of kinds, used for fencing, of iron or steel (other than of stainless steel). 70% 12. Gauze, cloth, grill, netting, fencing, reinforcing fabric and similar materials of iron or steel wire, expanded material of iron or steel (other than of stainless steel). 70% 13. Chain and parts thereof, of iron or steel; (other than of stainless steel) (1) Mooring chains 40% (2) Others. 70% 14. Anchors and grapnels, and parts thereof of iron or steel 40% 15. Nails, tacks, staples, hook-nails, corrugated nails, spiked cramps, studs, spikes, and drawing pins of iron or steel, whether or not with heads of other materials, but not including such articles with heads of copper. 40% 16. Bolts and nuts (including bolts ends and screws studs) whether or not threaded or tapped, and screws (including screw hooks and screw rings), of iron or steel, rivets, cotters, cotter pins, washers, and spring washers, of iron or steel). 70% 17. Other articles of iron or steel (other than of stainless steel). 100% Explanations :— For the purposes of this notification, the following expressions shall have the meanings hereby assigned to them : (1) Coils for re-rolling . — Coiled, semi-finished, hot rolled products of a rectangular section, not less than 1.5 mm thick, of a width exceeding 500 mm and of a weight of not less than 500 kgs per piece ; (2) Universal plates . — Products of rectangular section hot rolled lengthwise in a closed box or universal mill, of a thickness exceeding 5 mm but not exceeding 100 mm and of a width exceeding 150 mm but not exceeding 1200 mm ; (3) Sheets and plates . — Rolled products (other than coils for re-rolling) of any thickness and if in rectangles of a width exceeding 500 mm. 2. This notification shall come into force from the 28th day of February, 1986.
