Index Numbers of Wholesale Prices in India (Base: 2004-05=100) Review for the month of September, 2011

The official Wholesale Price Index for ‘All Commodities’ (Base: 2004-05 = 100) for the month September, 2011 rose by 0.6 percent to 155.8 (Provisional) from 154.9 (Provisional) for the previous month.

INFLATION

The annual rate of inflation, based on monthly WPI, stood at 9.72% (Provisional) for the month of September, 2011 (over September, 2010) as compared to 9.78% (Provisional) for the previous month and 8.98% during the corresponding month of the previous year. Build up inflation in the financial year so far was 4.21% compared to a build up of 4.18% in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Inflation for important commodities / commodity groups is indicated in Annex-1 and Annex-II.

The movement of the index for the various commodity groups is summarized below:-

PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 20.12%)

The index for this major group rose by 1.3 percent to 202.2 (Provisional) from 199.6 (Provisional) for the previous month. The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the month are as follows:-

The index for 'Food Articles' group rose by 1.4 percent to 196.5 (Provisional) from 193.7 (Provisional) for the previous month due to higher prices of poultry chicken (10%), gram (8%), fish-inland (4%), arhar, masur, fruits & vegetables and    egg (3% each) and condiments & spices (2%) and milk and urad (1% each).  However, the prices of tea and maize (4% each), jowar and coffee (2% each) and barley, wheat, ragi, fish-marine and pork (1% each) declined.

The index for 'Non-Food Articles'  group rose by 1.8 percent to 184.4 (Provisional) from 181.1 (Provisional) for the previous month due to higher prices of logs & timber (32%), raw cotton (6%), raw rubber (5%), raw silk (3%), linseed and rape & mustard seed (2% each) and raw jute, groundnut seed, sunflower, niger seed and coir fibre (1% each).  However, the prices of castor seed (6%), flowers (4%), soyabean and copra (3% each),  gingelly seed (2%) and gaur seed   (1%) declined.

The index for 'Minerals' group declined by 0.2 percent to 306.1 (Provisional) from 306.6 (Provisional) for the previous month due to lower prices of barytes (14%), magnesite (8%), chromite (4%), sillimanite and crude petroleum (2% each). However, the prices of zinc concentrate (14%), limestone and steatite (8% each), copper ore (6%), dolomite (5%) and       iron ore (1%) moved up.

FUEL & POWER (Weight 14.91%)

The index for this major group rose by 0.8 percent to 168.4 (Provisional) from 167.0 (Provisional) for the previous month due to higher prices of lubricants (5%), electricity (agricultural) and bitumen (4% each), electricity (domestic), electricity (industry), electricity (commercial) and petrol (3% each), electricity (railway traction) (2%) and furnace oil (1%).  However, the prices of  aviation turbine fuel (1%) declined.

MANUFACTURED PRODUCTS (Weight 64.97%)

The index for this major group rose by 0.2 percent to 138.6 (Provisional) from 138.3 (Provisional) for the previous month. The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the month are as follows:-

The index for 'Food Products' group rose by 0.9 percent to 151.7 (Provisional) from 150.4 (Provisional) for the previous month due to higher prices of mixed spices and powder milk (5% each), gur and mustard & rapeseed oil (4% each),     palm oil, copra oil, gola (cattle feed), rice bran oil and coffee powder (3% each), oil cakes, ghee, cotton seed oil and bakery products (2% each) and groundnut oil, soyabean oil and tea dust (unblended) (1% each).  However, the prices of      tea leaf (unblended) (7%), tea leaf (blended) (5%), tea dust (blended) (3%), processed prawn (2%) and maida (1%) declined.

The index for 'Beverages, Tobacco & Tobacco Products' group rose by 0.3 percent to 163.8 (Provisional) from 163.3 (Provisional) for the previous month due to higher prices of rectified spirit (4%) and cigarette and soft drinks & carbonated water (1% each).  However, the prices of  zarda (3%) and dried tobacco (1%) declined.

The index for 'Textiles' group declined by 1.5 percent to 126.4 (Provisional) from 128.3 (Provisional) for the previous month due to lower prices of gunny & hessian cloth and jute yarn (11% each), cotton yarn (4%), jute sacking bag (3%), woollen textiles (2%) and jute sacking cloth, cotton fabric and man made fibre (1% each).  However, the prices of tyre cord fabric (7%) moved up.

The index for 'Wood & Wood Products' group declined by 0.7 percent to 161.3 (Provisional) from 162.5 (Provisional) for the previous month due to lower prices of plywood & fibre board (2%).

The index for 'Paper & Paper Products' group rose by 0.5 percent to 131.6 (Provisional) from 131.0 (Provisional) for the previous month due to higher prices of paper pulp (8%), newspaper (4%), laminated paper (2%) and kraft  paper & bags and books/ periodicals/ journals (1% each).  However, the prices of card board, corrugated sheet boxes and paper rolls    (1% each) declined.

The index for 'Leather & Leather Products' group declined by 0.5 percent to 129.2 (Provisional) from 129.9 (Provisional) for the previous month due to lower prices of leathers (2%) and leather footwear (1%).  However, the prices of leather garments & jackets (3%) moved up.

The index for 'Rubber & Plastic Products' group declined by 0.1 percent to 133.4 (Provisional) from 133.6 (Provisional) for the previous month due to lower prices of plastic products and tubes (1% each).  However, the prices of tyres and rubber products (1% each) moved up.

The index for 'Chemicals & Chemical Products' group rose by 0.4 percent to 133.5 (Provisional) from 133.0 (Provisional) for the previous month due to higher prices of ammonium sulphate (6%), di ammonium phosphate (4%), paints (3%),     turpentine oil, distemper, safety  matches/ match box and urea (2% each) and synthetic resin, pigment & pigment intermediates, antibiotics, hair / body oils, explosives, ayurvedic medicines and washing powder (1% each).  However, the prices of rubber chemicals, basic organic chemicals, basic inorganic chemicals and agarbattis (1%) declined.

The index for 'Basic Metals, Alloys & Metal Products' group rose by 0.5 percent to 154.1 (Provisional) from 153.4 (Provisional) for the previous month due to higher prices of nuts/bolts/screw/ washers (12%), silver (6%), utensils (other than aluminium) (3%), iron castings, pig iron and chromium / chrome (2% each) and gold & gold ornaments, rounds,     angles and sponge iron (1% each).  However, the prices of zinc and sheets (1% each) declined.

The index for 'Machinery & Machine Tools' group rose by 0.6 percent to 125.0 (Provisional) from 124.3 (Provisional) for the previous month due to higher prices of  control equipments (6%), electric switch gears (4%), transformer and      pump & assembly (3% each), electric motors (2%) and engines, industrial  valves, fans, air conditioner & refrigerators,     insulators and pvc insulated cable (1% each).  However, the prices of microwave oven (5%), ball/roller bearing and batteries (2% each) and fibre optic cable and hydraulic equipment (1% each) declined.

FINAL INDEX FOR THE MONTH OF JULY, 2011 (BASE YEAR: 2004-05=100)

For the month of July, 2011 the final Wholesale Price Index for ‘All Commodities’ (Base: 2004-05=100) stood at 154.2 as compared to 154.0  (Provisional) and annual rate of inflation based on final index stood at 9.36 percent as compared to 9.22 percent (Provisional) reported on 16.08.2011.
