New Delhi, January 28, 2025: Lovely Professional University (LPU) student Himanshu Patil, from the School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, has made a significant breakthrough in addressing the critical shortage of heart donors and the challenges faced by patients with advanced heart failure. Under the expert mentorship of Dr. Harpreet Singh Bedi, Himanshu has developed a Mechatronic Heart—an innovative fusion of biology and technology that seeks to replicate the human heart’s functionality. The Mechatronic Heart system leverages servo motors, an Arduino Nano microcontroller, and a 12-bit 16-channel servo controller to emulate the intricate processes of a human heart, including the contraction and relaxation required to pump blood. Designed to simulate a human heartbeat at 72 beats per minute, this invention presents a promising solution to the global issue of heart transplant shortages. Beyond its potential as a groundbreaking medical advancement, it offers wide-ranging applications. It can serve as an educational tool for medical students, a research aid for scientists studying cardiovascular systems, and a possible temporary or permanent solution for patients with failing hearts. The system replicates the human heart’s functions, focusing on precise movements to simulate a heartbeat, with biocompatible and durable materials ensuring safety and functionality. It relies on servo motors to replicate the heart’s contraction and relaxation actions, an Arduino Nano microcontroller to manage the heartbeat rhythm and motor actions, and a 12-bit 16-channel servo controller for synchronized and accurate motor control. The Mechatronic Heart boasts several advantages, including enhanced efficiency, accuracy, and reliability. Its cost-effective design reduces expenses compared to traditional systems, while safety features mitigate risks of errors. The structure is flexible and modifiable for future advancements, with automation capabilities improving productivity and reducing human intervention. LPU continues to foster a culture of innovation and technological excellence, empowering students like Himanshu Patil to contribute to critical advancements in healthcare and beyond.
