A newspaper has reported that imports of raw sugar are hit as sugar mills are not certain whether imported raw sugar would be exempted from levy obligation.

The Central Government has allowed sugar factories to import raw sugar under Advance Authorization Scheme upto 30.09.2009 to be processed and sold in the domestic market and fulfill export obligation on 'ton-to-ton' basis vide DGFT Notification dated 17.02.2009 read with CBEC Notification dated 02.03.2009. Further, the Government has allowed the sugar factories to import raw sugar at zero import duty up to 01.08.09 vide CBEC Notification dated 17.04.2009. It is clarified that there would be no levy obligation on such imported raw sugar and the Notification to this effect is being issued shortly.
