Index Numbers of Wholesale Prices in India (Base: 2004-05=100)Review for the month of April 2011 - News and Press Release Dated:- 16-5-2011 - News - Press Information Bureau Government of India Ministry of Commerce Industry 16-May-2011 The official Wholesale Price Index for 'All Commodities' (Base: 2004-05 = 100) for the month April 2011 rose by 1.3 percent to 150.6 (Provisional) from 148.6 (Provisional) for the previous month. INFLATION The annual rate of inflation, based on monthly WPI, stood at 8.66% (Provisional) for the month of April' 2011 (over April 2010) as compared to 9.04% (Provisional) for the previous month and 10.88% during the corresponding month of the previous year. Build up inflation in the financial year so far was 1.34% compared to a build up of 1.76% in the corresponding period of the previous year. Inflation for important commodities / commodity groups is indicated in Annex-1 and Annex-II. The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the month are as follows:- The index for 'Food Articles' group rose by 2.5 percent to 183.5 (Provisional) from 179.1 (Provisional) for the previous month due to higher prices of fruits vegetables and coffee (10% each), bajra(7%), maize (6%), jowar (3%), urad and ragi (2% each) and moong, milk and fish-marine (1% each). However, the prices of barley (9%), tea (5%), masur and wheat (3% each), gram, egg, condiments spices and fish-inland (2% each) and mutton, arhar and beef buffalo meat (1% each) declined. The index for 'Non- Food Articles 'group rose by 2.0 percent to 192.9 (Provisional) from 189.2 (Provisional) for the previous month due to higher prices of groundnut seed (9%),raw rubber (7%), sugarcane and logs timber (5% each), cotton seed, gaur seed and castor seed (4% each), raw cotton (3%), sunflower (2%) and copra and niger seed (1% each). FINAL INDEX FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY, 2011 (BASE YEAR: 2004-05=100) For the month of February, 2011 the final Wholesale Price Index for All Commodities (Base: 2004-05=100) stood at 148.1 as compared to 146.0 (Provisional) and annual rate of inflation based on final index stood at 9.54 percent as compared to 8.31 percent (Provisional) reported on 15.04.2011 The WPI new series had a programming error and the WPI for Metal Products was not getting incorporated in the Index of Basic Metals, Alloys Metal Products and Manufactured Products. The series has now been revised from April, 2004 and placed on website. As a result of this correction, the rate of inflation for March, 2011 has increased from 8.98 percent announced earlier to 9.04 percent. The rate of inflation for April, 2011 without the correction would have been 8.53 percent as against 8.66 percent reported with this press release. Next date of press release: 14 .....
