INSTRUCTION NO. 1977/1999 Dated: December 28, 1999 Subject:- Quoting of Permanent Account Number (PAN) under the new series - instructions regarding As a first step towards implementation of comprehensive computerization in the Income Tax Department Permanent Account Numbers (PAN) under the new series are being allotted to the assesses. The availability of PAN is essentially needed for the processing of returns on computers on computers and also for making Individual Running Ledger Account system functional. 2. The Directorate of Income-Tax (Research, Statistics, Publications Public Relations) is bringing out a number of posters, pamplets etc. for wide circulation and display in the Income Tax Offices, Banks, Associations of Advocates and Chartered Accountants, Trade Associations etc. for urging the assesses to quote PAN on challans, returns of income and correspondence with the Income-Tax Department. 3. It will be necessary for the Department as well to ensure that PAN under the new series is quoted on correspondence with the assesses and on orders, challans, refunds etc. issued by the Department. 4. It has also been decided that a rubber stamp in red ink bearing the words "Please obtain and quote PAN" may be affixed on all letters, notices, challans, envelops etc. sent by the Department to the assesses. 5.
