Postal Department & Indian Railways to get registered under Service Tax from 1-4-2014 - Service Tax - F. No. 137/08/2013-S.T.

F. No. 137/08/2013-S.T. Government of India Ministry of Finance (Department of Revenue) Central Board of Excise Customs New Delhi, dated 21-4-2014 The Central Board of Excise Customs has informed the Department of Posts the Ministry of Railways that with effect from 1-4-2014 they should adhere to the provisions of the Finance Act, 1994 and the rules made thereunder, with regard to payment of service tax. Concomitantly they have been informed that they must ensure that their subordinate offices are registered and that payment of duty filing of returns is done electronically. The Department of Posts the Ministry of Railways have also been advised to seek the assistance of the jurisdictional Chief Commissioner/Commissioner. 2. The office of the Controller General of Accounts as well as the Principal Chief Controller of Accounts have also been informed accordingly. 3. You are advised to render all assistance and guidance in ensuring that these departments are registered, make electronic payment of service tax and file returns. Due consideration may be made for the transition period and their internal reorganization in order to comply with the legal requirements. After complying with these formalities, these departments should be audited so as to verify that they have discharged their service tax liability correctly.
